... a proverbial trip through space and time. This trip's format is a little different than my usual chronological day-by-day accounting. I undertook the safari with a friend and several other people I had not previously met, with a guide who deftly fed and transported us across this large country in an excellently tricked-out vehicle custom-designed for safari. Some nights we spent in hotels, but my favorites were camping beneath the stars in the national parks. The posts, as I gradually get to them, are written/arranged topically. There will likely be some photos that are cross-overs for illustrative purposes, as the purpose of my blog, of all my writing in general, is to present to you the world as I see it, and hope that you are as awed and mesmerized and humbled by the beauty and diversity on this planet as I am. :)

SIZE
Sunset in Etosha, Namibia.

An introduction to my experiences in Namibia - the landscape, the wildlife, the people, and the sheer size of this country.

VLEIS OF DEATH AND LIFE:  SOSSUSVLEI TO EPUPA
Epupa Falls, Namibia.

Travel from the desiccated trees in the dead vlei at Sossusvlei NP to the Kunene River spreading across the landscape at Epupa Falls.

ANCIENT PEOPLE IN AN ANCIENT LAND: THE SAN OF NAMIBIA (part 1)
San men start a fire by hand at the Ju/'Hoansi-San Living Museum near Grashoek, Namibia.

The San people of Namibia are one of the oldest ancestral tribes on the planet who have preserved their hunter-gatherer traditions. One can't help but ponder the nature of time in the presence of such history.

WANNA TUSSLE?  ANIMAL ENCOUNTERS (WITH EACH OTHER) IN ETOSHA
Male elephants sparring at a water hole in Etosha National Park.

Witnessing a variety of species of animals interact with each other in play and in sparring.

AT THE CROSSROADS:  TRADITIONAL HIMBA CULTURE IN NAMIBIA
Traditional Himba princess, Kaokoland, Namibia.

Meeting some traditional Himba people inside their kraal, then a stroll through a non-traditional village where men offer me hooch and children on both sides of tradition line play together.

ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK:  BIRDS AND THOSE WITH PATTERNS

Giraffe standing tall in perfect pose. Etosha national park, Namibia.

A quick safari through Etosha to highlight some of my favorite birds and mammals, among them giraffes, zebras and lilac breasted rollers.
